Ever since its foundation, the new institution has become one of the most important centres of education and culture in Maramures. Through the exemplary work of the teachers, The Teacher Training High School became known and respected not only in our region, but also in the country. For years in a row, the high school had a famous choir, which was awarded the first prize at specialised contests. The high school also had a valuable team of rhythmic modern gymnastics, which won many national competitions.
Starting with the year 1972, the high shcool also gains reputation through its remarkable results obtained, every year, in the Romanian language and literature competitions. For example, in 1976 our students won all the prizes (one first prize, two second prizes, two third prizes and two special prizes) in “Mihai Eminescu” National Contest, which took place in Targu Mures.
Since 1980, despite the exceptional results, the teacher training specialization was transferred to Sighetu Marmatiei, and the institution became “The Theoretical High School of Philology-History”. In a short time the philology and history classes imposed their value through the bright results of the students in national contests, and the school occupied, one year after another, the second place in the county.
In 1982 the high school changed its name in “The Industrial High School No. 9”. The high school functioned under this impersonal name until 1990. Even if the institution was “de-personalized”, it still preserved its individuality and prestige at high standards, due to the exceptional teachers and students. Thus, statistics show that more than 85% of the students who graduated the philology and history classes at this time continued their studies in a university, some of them becoming remarkable personalities in the Romanian universities (at the philosophy and history universities in Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Bucharest, Suceava, Constanta, Baia Mare) or integrating honourably in society.
In 1990, the teachers board, inspired, decided that the high school be named after the “complete man of Romanian culture” –Mihai Eminescu, becoming, this way, the only theoretical high school with a humanistic specialization in our county. Ever since, under the spiritual protection of its patron, the school has known the strongest development and the most successful accomplishments in its history, becoming a point of reference in the education in Maramures.
The teachers together with the students of the high school, watched by the protecting genius of “the morning star of Romanian poetry”, are determined, through each person’s work, generosity, competence and responsibility, to keep the standard as high as possible, honouring both the previous generations and the hope of the ones to come! Starting with the year 1999, due to the special achievements of the students and the teachers, the school received the title of “National College”.
